The (de-)forming power of a community
Francis Ford Coppola’s film The Godfather is arguably one of the greatest masterpieces in film history. He did a flawless job in all the basic elements of filmmaking. With the dramaturgical work, as it tells two different stories parallel but followable way about how a man can become the leader of a mafia organization. By the phenomenal acting, by its wonderful cinematography, and by the famous music, this film set such high-level standard, that since its creation, it has been taught and mentioned in all kinds of film art forums.
I thought a lot about what an intelligent person like Coppola, was messaging with such a perfectly packaged story (written by Mario Puzo). I concluded that the answer is to be found in the final scene of the film. The youngest prince wins the kingdom after his father’s death, but in the process, he turns into a monster, whom his former love fears and detests. There is nothing aimable about him anymore, nothing human. And with the unscrupulous denial of his cruelty, he illustrates that he is now rather a mortal hazard to everything and everyone in his environment than a loving husband, brother-in-law, or friend – who he used to be.
The father’s story shows what it is like when someone tramples over people because of his own ambitions, ruthlessly builds his own kingdom. And the boy’s story tells the tragedy when a more peaceful, morally healthy character is forced by his environment to deny himself.
Like all great stories, obviously this one is also exaggerated. By narrating how to inherit a Mafia organization, it describes the power that can tear an individual apart. How we can deny our own values, sacrifice our peace of mind, just to comply with the rules of our environment. How we (de-)shape our personality, even to the point of cracking it, simply to be able to conquer in an environment, to be as successful as possible in a role forced upon us.
The story is exaggerated, but if we look around in today’s world, we see equally hard soul-crushing organizations, e.g.: economic crime organizations, prisons, radical secret groups. But if we don’t want to exaggerate, we can also think of more flexible organization, as many of us work for profit-oriented companies, for politically controlled institutes, or we join a community organized around some goal or interest (sports club, entrepreneurial association, study/educational group – whether it’s about us or our child).
The important thing is to recognize the point when the rules of a community put too big pressure on us. Let’s identify the moment when our strength to remain ourselves is weakening, the point when it is more and more difficult to maintain the state of respecting and loving ourselves. And then let us have the strength to make a step, step out from it and “heal” from the distortion.
