BURNOUT – THERE IS A WAY OUT!
What does burnout mean?
Burnout is a set of symptoms caused by long-term stress and emotional strain of any origin. Burnout does not only happen at work.
It means that we are physically-emotionally-mentally exhausted from a long-lasting, stressful situation.
This situation can knock over important areas of our lives, like lines of dominos they would fall in order. And it could happen that we use wrong type of remedy to cure our condition.. We run away, get angry, project negative emotions and destroy valuable relationships.
“During the pandemic, many burnout catalysts were already present in our lives, but the current international and economic situation mercilessly packed them into an unbearable, long-lasting package”
What leads to burnout?
- Constant work stress related to increasing performance. Worrying about losing a job or private business.
- Creating and maintaining a peaceful home. Baby-sit children, ensure they are properly studying and developing.
- Cherish family ties and friendships. Take care of older relatives physically and mentally, maintain good relations with friends.
- Manage our body’s health. As prevention exercise actively, maintain an optimal body weight and regularly go to medical centers for screenings.
- Continuously filter the 21st century’s information dumping. Find out what’s going on in the world but not fall for fake news, not suffer from the pressure of social media.
This situation is on-going. We live under strict rules, our old habits and way of living is gone for forever. The hope that everything will be as it was, vanished long time ago.
We are tired, we have run out of steam, we are facing burnout and we cannot find the strength to renew ourselves and adapt our lives to the new situation. And what is more, we should like our new way of living, must stop feeling that all our sources of joy have been taken away and that they are just putting more and more burden on us.
What are the symptoms of burnout, how could you recognize them in you?
Depending on the individual’s personality type, the way one gives signs of burnout to the world and oneself varies, however there are typical emotions and phenomena.
First, we simply start to neglect things that were important for us before, then our emotions change significantly.
- We don’t work anymore diligently at work, we cancel meetings without excuse. We don’t care if we miss deadlines. We don’t open email or simply don’t turn on the laptop for hours.
- We don’t force exercising or have social life events, rather we watch in pajamas 12 episodes in a row of our twentieth series.
- We are cynical about all the news and advice given by the press, our partner or our friend.
- We are aphetic about all kind of significant changes announced by our company or government, we acknowledge new set of rules with a shrug.
- Or au contraire! If our temperament dictates so, we enlarge every small obstacle and react aggressively. We get angry because of any tiny restriction, we yell at the child who is not studying, we loudly criticize the health care in hospitals, governmental decisions in public offices.
- Ultimately exhaustion can lead us to burnout and depression. To the world of sorrow and hopelessness open like a big, black hole, which is not an easy state of mind to bear.
“We are not weak, but exhausted”
Is there a way out from burnout?
Of course, there is. The first important step is to realize how tiring these last 2 years have been. We should realize we are not weak, but exhausted. It is true that the road to rehabilitation is still long, but there are already things that are back to normal.
The children go to kindergarten, school and university again. Sports facilities and offices are open. Restaurants and hotels welcome visitors.
We can eliminate some of the burdens and start to get again some of the pleasures, but the difficult period is far from over, even though we are already very tired. A war is happening in Europe, recession started in most of the countries, increasing number of natural disasters all over the world due to global warming.
These are the times when we need to do self-reflection. Alone or with the help of a coach, find for us ways out from the changed situation and from burnout. We should adopt and not desperately wait for circumstances to be changed or improved.
“Everyone should start with things that gives prompt joy with low effort.”
How can we ease the burnout?
- Simply being outside. Clear out our heads by going on trips, long walks or gardening.
- Cook a fantastic gourmet dinner, bake the children’s favourite cake with them.
- Complete a long-postponed course or training online. Learn an instrument, start a craft hobby (basket weaving, sewing pillow covers, welding, carpentry, etc.).
- Learn how to do autogenic training, mindfulness, meditation and calming breathing techniques.
- Have a structured and scheduled everyday life, in which there is room for hobbies and friends.
“You give answers to these questions, I only help you to find them and afterwards build a plan.”
